We need to change like everyone else. The nations with the highest quality of life in the world are social democracies. Take Norway and Sweden for example. Their citizens are highly educated, have great healthcare, low crime, and low income inequality. Social democracies also have gun control (which proves that gun control lowers crime), abortion, universal healthcare (France is #1 in the world), no capital punishment, and Norway has gay marriage.



Doesn't this show anything?



By the way, a social democracy is not the same as a socialist state. So don't scream about how China disproves my point.

Why would we want to downgrade to socialism? There is a reason why the United States is so wealthy and successful. It is because of freedom.



Finland, which borders Norway and Sweden, has some of the loosest gun control in the world and one of the highest firearm ownership rates in the world, yet their crime and murder rate is lower than Norway or Sweden so your comparison does not prove anything. You can even obtain silencers for your handguns in Finland unrestricted.



Abortion and gay marriage is legal in the United States too. So what are you trying to get at? State's have the right to create their own laws, but abortion and gay marriage are both legal at the federal level just like in Norway or Sweden. Also state's have the right to pass laws abolishing capital punishment if they so choose. State's can also create universal healthcare programs and would run more efficiently at the state level than the federal level.

70% tax rates, big brother always watching, no way to protect yourself, no incentive for business, heroine parks, prostitutes in store windows, long waits for health care, poor service because health care pro's are paid less, etc.

Health care: Universal health care might work for other countries, but it certainly won't work for the U.S. The problem right now is the fact that health care is unlike the typical product or service - it does not follow supply/demand - and it needs to! We need information... the prices doctors charge, the quality of the work doctors do. Prices are ridiculous and we're being charged high prices for poor quality work - because we don't have the information to make the right decision.



Minimum wage: Raising the minimum wage is NOT going to help anything - it'll just make things worse. The raise in wages cuts into company profits, leading the company to either cut jobs or raise the prices of their products/services. If they raise the price of their product/service and minimum wage goes up, what happens? You're back to where you started again... with less jobs. I also want to point out that raising the minimum wage allows the government to take more in terms of taxes you have to pay.



Really, the democrats THINK things will make everything perfect, but they never consider the consequences.

First let me just say small countries can work with a mixed model of social democracy. large countries wont. Norway? less than 5M people Sweden about 9m people? France 64M the only one of any size and its about 1/5 the pop of the usa.



Ok heres what matters. Immigration. This is major reason that will not work here. the amount of immigrants to the USA each year (legal and illegal ) would almost equal Norways entire population ( thats every year )

Immigrants, by the nature of almost all of them being poor will be on some form of assistance through government programs. This creates a ratio of burden on the system economically ( not to mention infrastructure, crime and education ) that those countries you mention do 'not' have to deal with.



Furthermore while you can quote the ones you want, the england doesnt have guns but has plenty of gun crimes.



And the USA already does have some socialistic components already, medicare, medicaid, social security to name a few. And wouldnt ya know it... all 3 of those are underperforming, mismanaged messes that are running out of money.



europes populations are dwindling.. while the usa's population is growing ( due to immigration mostly ). this is the key difference and the reason why it would be a big mistake to take on those policies.


Have you been to Scandinavia? a sandwich costs 12 bucks. Liberals make books that tell you their lives are so great. they lie.



Our social spending goes to minorities and the poor, while theirs goes to things that help all people in their daily lives. We have a much larger income gap. We also have a larger and much more complex country. And were richer. If you take away our rich people, then we have an income gap just like europe. So what?

The first people labeled as progressive were republicans. You can't deny that Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Goldwater were progressives. Socialism (which even if you throw in the word %26quot;democracy%26quot; at the end of it doesn't change anything) has brought on Italian Fascism, the German Nazi Party, COMMUNISM, and a multitude of other societies that seemed great and all - with the exception of personal liberties being crushed for the sake of a central, godhead government. If anything we need to CHANGE in the direction AWAY from SOCIALISM. We need to revert to a full-fledged, state rights, decentralized government that doesn't punish a person for being successful with a nonstop onslaught of taxes.



Universal Health Care seems nice . . . if you take into account that:



1) I'll have to pay for everyone and their uncle to get health care when my own father can barely survive after having a heart attack simply because he makes more than 30k a year.

2) If I get cancer, I'll have to wait anywhere in excess of nine months to finally get treatment . . . sure hope the cancer understands that and lets me live long enough.
