How did the status of the U.S. as a nation in the world change over the course of the 20th century?

Uhhh we were an upstart nation just begining to be taken seriously at the start of the 20th century to the most influential, most powerfull and largest military in 1918 we barely had an army, in 1941 we barely had a military by 1945 we were the strongest, largest and most technologically advanced military in the world. In 1899 we gained control of Puerto Rico, the Phillipines and Guam, now we have military bases almost anywhere you can imagine, can deploy simutaneously anywhere in the world and until the 21 st century had the worlds strongest economy. The 20th century was the American century. The 21st will be the European Union's century, which will include the fall from power of the united states. How did the status of the U.S. as a nation in the world change over the course of the 20th century?Internationally people started to like them less and less.
