I think terrorist now means what ever our government says it means today. They threw out the dictionary about 6 years ago.

General kidnappers may have many reasons for their crime. Usually for extortion for money or a futile attempt to escape for their crime to use as a negotiating tool. Some kidnappings are for pervented sex crimes.

Actually I think they hate themselves for their weakness and depravity, so they take it out on those that are of a higher caliber than they can be and do so in the name of their religion.
