The importance of Antietam was just that, a major Union victory. It proved to the British and French, who were contemplating on coming in and allying themselves with the Confederacy, that the Union was in it for the long haul and it wouldn't be an easy war. It also allowed Lincoln to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, which he had been waiting until after a decisive Union victory to announce. On top of all of that, it was the single bloodiest day in the Civil War and drove off the invading Confederates for the time being.
Help on the Battle of Antietam..?
The second battle for Antietam was important for two reasons.

The south lost a vast majority of its best troops. It was the first battle that the North went on the offencive and stayed on the offencive. General Robert E Lee was not invincible. This battle also demonstrated how industry and Technology made killing more efficient and that pure numbers on the battle field did not matter any more. The north introduced the cartridge self repeating rifle at this time, which wreaked havoc on the Confederates.
