They provided jobs to a lot of people doing useful things such as rural electrification. Establishing social security was a great accomplishment as it meant people would no longer die from poverty just because they were too old to work. The programs didn't really end the depression however, and when government spending was cut dramatically after the 1936 landslide win for the Democrats, the depression went into its second dip.

I am not fully informed on the New Deal, but I had it in school recently. If I recall correctly the New Deal basically saved the country from damnation after the Wall Street crash.

What I find most important was that he ended the Prohibition! But on a more serious note, he reorganized the Bank system. Banks all over the country were falling by the hundreds. He closed all the banks across the country for three days to more easily filter out which ones could be saved, and which ones were to be gotten rid of. Most industries became state owned so that they could be regulated better. I guess you could say that the New Deal was bad in the sense that it still caused a lot of unemployment, but then again it was to be expected during/after the Great Depression.

Its interesting how Americans always look back at the New Deal as being a big success, and now they criticise Obama's way of doing things. Even though FDR and Obama are almost identical in governing.

If you'd like to read more around all of this I suggest you read Steinbeck, I thought he was a great read.
