Why do Presidential candidates run on a Party instead of Individual platform?

If elected, aren't they supposed to represent all U.S. citizens regardless of what Party they are affiliated with? So wouldn't it be better for the U.S. citizens to hear each candidate based on their own merit rather than a Party?

Just think how many more qualified candidates we could have. And maybe they should be qualified before being allowed to run for office by completing a test or something... Just a thought.

It would be a refreshing change to hear something about the issues that are affecting our nation for a change instead of all the mudslinging between Parties. What do you think? Why do Presidential candidates run on a Party instead of Individual platform?because america really isn't a democratic nation.

its really a dual party.

neither republican or democrat will allow a independent to run for president.

Why do Presidential candidates run on a Party instead of Individual platform?
