I'm writing a paper that is on the three most important changes in the United States from the creation of the nation through Reconstruction. I have two. The place of women in society and the shift from slavery to freedom for Africans. I can't think of another good one though. I'm having trouble brainstorming. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!!Changes in America from the creation of the nation through reconstruction.?Jacksonian Democracy.
Up until the election of Andrew Jackson, the democracry of the United States was not meant for everyone to participate. Prior to Jackson, only wealthy, land-owning males were allowed to vote. Jackson changed this by opening up elections to all white males (obviously Blacks were not voting because they were in bondage, and the women weren't voting because they were in the kitchen).
Another aspect of Jacksonian Democracy was the introduction of the Australian Ballot. Before Jackson, you would declare your vote verbally. Voting was a keg party for rich white men to talk public policy, get into political groups, talk a lot of $%!# on the other candidates, and elect people. The Australian Ballot introduced the concept of concealed voting-- you would now go into a voting booth, pull the curtian behind you, and vote. You would now not be rediculed by peer pressure to vote a certain way, since no one knew who you voted for unless you wanted to tell them.
You could also address how Jackson was the first to really introduce dick-headed US behavior, namely the Indian Removal Act. The Westward Expansion meant the Indians got kicked out for white settlers to move out West with the intention of starting new lives and making money. The indians got a royal dump taken on them with how they were just completley disregarded as human beings, killed, moved, starved, out of the settlements. The Tail of Tears is one of the more well known examples.
You can do a lot with Jacksonian Democracy. God's best invention for the 21st Century is something called Wikipedia, and its every students best friend. Go use it, and you will learn everything you would ever need to know to write a paper.
Plus, if you're just in some normal history class, you will blow your teacher away by talking about Jacksonian Democracy. They will probabaly call you Jesus from then on.
