What can we do to improve India as a nation?

Hi All,

On this day that marks our 59th year of independence, let's unite our minds and think of all that can be improved in our country. Any solutions for what you feel is yet to change and HOW TO change it?

1) The yet-existent discrimination in the name of castes, gender, religion, etc

2) The unhygenic/polluted environment

3) The uneducated population

4) The corrupt political system

And any others you think are key..

PS: No answers from critics who're good for just that - only answers with constructive solutions please! What can we do to improve India as a nation? It is high time for all of us for introspection. If we try to point out any wrong, vested interests get triggered and instigate innocents to rebel. And a never ending arguments/counter arguments start.

For our inner self, we know what we are doing and what we should or should not be doing. For this nor evidences are required neither any convincing is essential. Let us be committed for the national growth, whether we apparently gain anything personally or not - though ultimately it is going to be everyone's gain. In what ever small way we can contribute positively and regularly, we must do. Awareness for our responsibilities and rights as well, legitimate means to secure our goals - no matter even if battle is long drawn, our commitment to make our elected representatives accountable for their (mis)deeds and take them to task - what ever smallest way we can; attend to our work dedicatedly, honestly and dutifully could be small but effective result oriented solutions to help the common man and in turn the masses. This itself can make us AUR KAMYAAB.

Someone has pointed out Bhagvadgeeta, yes, the honest Karma blended with our awareness is going to be the long term effective tool.

Get people to stop crapping all over the place!

All of your cities look and smell like an open sewer. Actually a sewer smells better than your cities. And get your people to take a shower once in awhile.
I believe that the solution lies in the Hindu scripture, the Geeta which is most definitely a ready-made textbook which serves us where we are; whoever we may be, whatever may be our problem, irrespective of place and time, caste and creed.

I'm not from India, nor do I currently reside there...but I think your country is beautiful...and there is alot to be proud off... there is much that my country, Singapore, can learn from yours... for example, the way your people dealt with the Bhiwandi riots to the desecration of Meenatai's statue, to the serial blasts on the trains.... I can't imagine any other countrymen storming onto the streets to help the injured and the stranded, they way you guys did!

There is indeed much that the world can learn from the country that has been invaded by several nations and yet who's resources, love and spirit remains abundant....

Happy independence day India...

By the way, newjl...what kinda answer is that..look who's the one crapping now? Grow up...
Go India!!! Happy Independence Day

poverty is one

but even if there are thousands of wrong things in india, it is still the best
I think that education should be freely available and should be compulsory not only in the cities but in the villages. With education comes awareness of the need for hygiene, nutrition, pollution of ones area and the environment, casteism is something that unfortunately is a snake with many heads, if you cut one off another comes to take its place. It will take a change in the mindset of all the youth of today to change the system. With a proper education, people can make a proper choice of leaders. Politicians are elected, they are not supposed to inherit a 'throne'.
I am a foriegner, so take this for what it is worth.

Although discrimination is very difficult to fight, as your country modernizes more widely, the mechanisms driving discrimination will disappear with each successive generation. Your children will face less and their children even less. That is not to say it should be left to wither on its own; it should be beat back with all possible effort.

Hygeine/pollution concerns are a matter of education, motivated politicians, and grass roots efforts.

Education should be mandatory for all children. You need laws that impose penalties on parents for not complying.

Battling corruption takes political will and that only comes with honest campaign financing. It also has to be strictly enforced down to the lowest levels.

Happy Independence!
I should agree with Ashish K, that the major problem is education. I think that India already has a lot ot be proud of. The moment indian nation will manage to educate at least 80% of total population, it wil bw the heaven. Educated people will take care about the environment, they will understand that castes and religion differences are only formal and they will vote for the right goverment.

The other problem that India has to manage somehow is birth control. This is very important one too.
Control population, root out corruption and have education for all.
