What would make me happy?
If more people would realize that extending a helping hand to people less fortunate is not so horrible. I want everyone to have the very same chance in life, and to have access to all of the same things. I think that money shouldn't determine if you live or die. And I certainly don't think that it should be a determining factor in the level of education someone has access to. I think that it shouldn't matter if you are rich or poor - everyone should be able to do whatever they want to in this nation. And if that means that I pay a little more in taxes, then so be it.
I wish that people weren't so selfish.
What wouldn't I change? The rewards for success - I think that people deserve to be paid if they achieve things in their lives. But those achievements shouldn't be making CEO and running a company into the ground because you wanted to collect your billion-dollar bonus. But I do think that people need to realize that money should not be the only motivating factor in achievement. If it is, then they lead a very sad existance, and they will never be truly happy.Lisa -

No, I wouldn't be happy. In my mind, the purpose of social programs is to help people out of a bad situation. When someone is in between jobs and, while looking for another uses a social program, I have no issue with my tax dollars helping them meet their basic, physical needs.
However, unless they are genuinely physically incapable, I don't believe whatever social program they are using should be a life-long free pass.
What do I like about American? I DO believe that people can go as far as they want in this country with their life. I DO think that we have the best system in place for allowing us to mandate who is in power and what they do with it (if we used all our privileges and rights, that is). I DO enjoy the way we take care of our troops to the best of our ability. I love the way we try to help those less fortunate.
